• I passed my element 3 exam on the first try!

  I can't even begin to say how helpful HamTestOnline was in studying for the test.  I took the route of basically memorizing the questions, I did not buy any books to explain the theory, but I did study using a book for my Technician license back in 1992, so I was familiar with the basic electrical components and antenna designs mentioned in the the questions.  HamTestOnline lets you select which test pool (Technician, General, Extra) you want to study and further it allows you to select subsections as well.  I was having a heck of a time memorizing the privileges on each band and the band plans, so I just turned off those parts.  I basically didn’t study them at all.  On my test there was only question from this section and I just skipped it.

  The element 3 (General written) test is multiple choice, 35 questions and you need to get 26 right in order to pass.  I don’t know how many I missed, but there were 6 questions I wasn’t 99.99% sure about including the one I skipped, so I had a buffer of 3 more I could miss.  If you decided to use HamTestOnline as a comparison, I got to a 76% rate on the New General questions and an overall ranking of 87.  My total hours was 12:19.  I’m not sure sure how they calculate that to be honest.

  Finally, you can definitely do this there’s no reason to pay for SSB when you can easily get your HAM license!  While it may be sacrilegious to say this, you don’t need to be an electronics guru or a ham radio wonk to use the Nets and mail programs like WinLink. What you do need to do is jump through the hoops (license) and then get someone to help you get setup (aka the place you’re going to buy your radio from!)

Second you can take the book with you to the exam and flip through it and refresh your memory on the questions with red dots so they are fresh in your mind. I studied about 10 hours for my Element 3 test and passed it missing only 1 question. I plan to test for my Element 4 on the 19th of March which will be a month or less after purchasing my subscription. I average between 1 and 4 hours per day (total) of study time and even skip a day occasionally depending on the time I have available to study. I plan to return to the site even after I pass my Element 4 just to finish the "course" and keep things fresh in my mind at least until my subscription expires or until I reach 100% on all levels." Not everyone learns and retains information in the same way. I went to a two day crash course for Technician and found that most the information went right over my head. For the next two days before the testing, I basically just memorized the Q & A. I passed my Tech with 91%. The problem is I really didn't learn or retain the material. About a week later I decided I wanted to also get my General so I purchased a Manual and started to actually read it instead of just doing Q & A. That wasn't sinking in because I would read a page and the next day would have to start over again and re-read it because I couldn't remember what I read the day before. I do have a point, trust me I'm getting to it! Next I tried a Pod Class and although they had some good tips for remembering the material they presented, it wasn't sticking. So, after abandoning all hope that I could do this, I was actually looking at the advertisements in the back of my ARRL General Manual and found your website. After doing your 30 or 50 free study questions, I was hooked, and I just wanted you to know that I subscribed on 28 January 2009 and took my General Test on 31 January 2009 and passed with 94 %, I think I missed two questions. So my learning style is definitely interactive and hands on. I will definitely recommend your site to everyone I talk to about Ham Radio."
